The employing of Apprentices: The life of a new Cyber SME

Monday, October 16, 2017

It’s now getting very real and I have just 7 days left until TRaC Defence starts for real and the new chapter and adventure starts.

I have now started to think about how I implement my business plan and strategy to try and differentiate myself within a busy market place.

I have been involved in Scouting for some years, and as a Cub Scout Leader have learnt a lot through working with young people. One of my core strategies is to continue this through into my professional career and business. I am keen to take on Apprentices and bring new and fresh ideas into the Cyber arena. This will also put something back, not only into an industry I love and that has and continues to be good to me, but also to give young people a route into this exciting and busy market.

I am lucky to be getting support from Worcestershire Business Central on the mechanics of how the process works, however I would be keen to understand other organisations’ experiences.

What do clients think when you want to involve Apprentices in delivery of their programmes?
What mixture of structured training vs on the job training do organisations use? Is there a preferred ratio?
As an SME how do you ensure variety, are there like minded businesses out there that would take short placements so that Apprentices can get a varied view of the industry and help grow their knowledge?
Are there any unseen pitfalls a new startup should consider before starting an Apprenticeship scheme?
I know these are just a few of a lot of questions I should be asking, but I really would like to understand people’s thoughts around this subject? As an industry, I believe we have a real opportunity, but want to ensure I get it right as it’s a big responsibility and greatly impacts other people if it goes wrong...

I will be posting a regular blog on my website, LinkedIn and Twitter, covering my journey while I try to grow my business in the Cyber market place. This will include the highs, the lows and the mistakes of which I am sure there will be many. Nobody ever learned anything from getting it right all the time 😊!
